Google Education Group (GEG) Reception
Wolf Creek has partnered with Google to build the first GEG in Western Canada known as the Alberta GEG. We would like to welcome attendees to Convergence and create awareness of the GEG and how it can be of assistance to school districts.

This GEG is part of world-wide network of educators who are seeking best practices around using Google Apps for Education and associated devices such as Chromebooks. The GEG is a community designed to build capacity of educational professionals and related paraprofessionals in providing educational tools for student learning. To qualify to build a GEG, you must be approved from Google and have a Google Certified Teacher in charge of moderating the GEG. Wolf Creek has been approved through this process to host the Alberta GEG.

Keynote: The Great Unforeseen Consequences of the Digital Transformation
Going digital has fantastic, unintended consequences for learning. New digital ‘techbooks’ arrive by tablet, computer, and phone. They have cloud-based media DNA: differentiated, personalized, updatable and media rich. These inevitable smarter 'books' have profound implications. When the textbook goes digital, the whole game changes. It becomes its own backpack with a camera, sensors, encyclopedias, and much more. Much like the old textbook, core resources remain the teacher’s friend while their augmented realities, embedded codes, and mobile media create deep and immediate connections to learning for students.

Pedagogy, Assessment and Collaboration; How and why these matter in todays technological world
During this presentation, attendees will receive information from two working highschool classroom teachers/technology coaches as it relates to 'the big three'. The impact of technology and its enhancement of teaching practice, assessment, and collaboration is immense and teachers need to be able to capitalize on it. So where do we start? Using technology in the classroom is not something to be feared, it is meant to be embraced. There are things that we must do to ensure that individual student learning(s) and success is optimized. Learning today should go beyond just the technological tools themselves! Technology should enhance what educators are doing to aid students in thinking more critically and creatively while preparing for a life of learning. Join us for our views and beliefs on how technology impacts; pedagogy, assessment and collaboration.

The Technology Footprint
Leveraging presentation layer and data connection technologies found in Sharepoint and aggregating data from a number of other isolated systems, the CBE has built an interface to empower Principals and school staff to assess their current technology footprint, identify the connections between different pieces of the technology puzzle, and make decisions about where to invest as they refresh. The interface uses live data to ensure accuracy and applicability. We would like to share the approaches and outcomes as we move from this version to the next iteration and learn from any similar experiences at other districts.

The solution was implemented in Sharepoint but could be replicated in many other systems (testing has identified potential using Archibus or Google for the presentation layer as well).

Analytics in K-12
Student learning is complex. All phases of student experiences produce data - in the classrooms, in the labs, on the net, within social networks, when with friends and when interacting wiht loved ones. With access to these big, continuous, and disparate datasets, learning experiences can be characterized based on quality of the content, personalized assessments, learners’ comprehension, topic associations made by learners, learners’ feelings/emotive states, learners' insights, learners' assumptions in discussions, effectiveness of peer networks, instructional capacity, learner challenges, learners’ confidence, learners' recognition of new skills, and learners' refinement of gained competencies. Such characterizations not only enable the capture of information on where, why, how, and when learning happens, but also empower refinement of instructional measures employed by the institution in a continuous manner. This presentation highlights Athabasca University's efforts in big data analytics with specific examples, demonstrations, and take-home systems from the K-12 sector.

Alberta Open Learning Consortium
Throughout rural Alberta, there has been a long trend towards rural depopulation with significant impacts on rural living in general and rural schooling in particular. The trend in the three founding school divisions (LRSD, PLRD, and PRRD) has been one of decline in student enrolment compounded by continued staffing reductions. As a result, these jurisdictions have seen a loss of staffing expertise and support. Using a shared services model, Video Conferencing instructional delivery and the creation of a supportive asynchronous learning environment have been used to meet student needs across four rural divisions across Alberta.

This session will examine how the shared services, technology mediated learning environments that was created through the consortium has great potential in engaging rural students in relevant learning. How we offer a greater selection of program choice with challenging learning environments consisting of peers and teachers from various communities who have varied life experiences and community cultural values.

Software Defined Networking presented by Cybera
Software-defined networking (SDN) is part of the open networking movement that, like cloud computing, blurs the boundaries between networks and computers. SDN has become more important with the emergence of virtualization, where data centres may need to create and configure virtual machines remotely, and configure firewall rules or network addresses in response. Often, the discussions become overly tactical – focused on specific point-in-time issues and services, or too pie-in-the-sky. How can you cooperatively engage leaders in a conversation that arrives at a decision about the overall direction for IT and ET in your jurisdiction?

In this session, the Four Futures of IT and ET in K-12 Education model will be shared. Participants will work with the model to answer two important questions: where are we today, and where do we need to be in three years? Through this process, participants will learn how to use this model to lead this important strategic conversation in their school jurisdiction.

Given the nature of the topic, ET and IT leaders are encouraged to attend the session together.

The workshop will explore moving beyond passive network connections and explore solutions to new ways to deliver technology in an Education Community of Interest.

We will discuss requirements identified by ATLE member engagement, including:

  • Addressing wireless infrastructure requirements, attached to scalable bandwidth for access to private and public networks
  • Relieve the burden from school boards/districts of being ad hoc ISP’s  due to managing exploding bandwidth
  • Need for a virtual network fabric that allows for connection to extended points-of-presence (PoP’s) in schools and technology providers; and
  • Supplementing network access to schools to support ‘always on’ connectivity to technology resources

Keynote: The Distraction Addiction - Getting the Information You Need and the Communication You Want, Without Enraging Your Family, Annoying Your Colleagues, and Destroying Your Soul
Smartphones, PCs, and the Internet all promised to make us smarter, more connected, and more productive, but all too often have the opposite effect. Some argue that there's nothing we can do, or that it's not really a problem. Old users always lament the arrival of new information technologies, and computers have already rewired our brains to read status updates rather than Steinbeck. Alex Pang wants to provide an alternative to this sophisticated pessimism. In this talk, Pang explains how we can learn to use our devices to be more focused and mindful, not fractured and distracted. He explains how technologies can be used to extend our minds, and augment our abilities-- not break up our attention and skew our thought process. Rather than be forced into a state of perpetual distraction, with all the unhappiness and discontent such a state offers, we can approach information technologies in a way that is mindful and nearly effortless, and that contributes to our ability to focus, be creative, and be happy.

Enhancing Student Outcomes with 802.11ac and Network-Powered Analytics

The need to engage digital learners requires use of educational tools and technologies. In today’s K-12 classrooms, immersive technologies are being introduced at a rapid rate, yet many educators are in the dark without visibility to measure success.

On one hand your network requires scalability to meet growing demands, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi will help you meet that goal. The other hand will demand intelligence yielded through analytics that can measure and change outcomes to assure student success.

Only with Extreme Networks and X10 will you discover technology that transforms your network beyond a “data highway” into a strategic asset elevating the personalized learning environment for your entire student population.

Please Join Extreme Network's Chief Mobility Officer, Mike Leibovitz, as he shares his insight on challenges faced by educators and IT departments alike. Mike lectures globally on emerging education trends bringing over a decade of experience to his insightful presentation at the ATLE Convergence conference.

In this session you will discover:

  • How network-powered analytics provides insight and helps drive student success
  • 802.11ac Wi-Fi and K-12 best practices and recommendations

Student Portfolios in SharePoint
Scholantis has implemented an ePortfolio solution built on SharePoint 2013. Scholantis is a Vancouver based company who specialise in portals and websites for K-12. The pilot project begun in the fall of 2013 and launched to students in January 2014. In that time the pilot School division has seen significant user adoption and sustained use from both teachers and students.

Portfolios are much more than a digital scrapbook. They are a purposeful collection of student work that demonstrates their efforts, progress, and achievements. The portfolios allow students to create a collection of text; documents and presentations; blog posts or other media (e.g. photographs, videos, certificates, rubrics, assignments). They can be shared with teachers to evaluate progress, demonstrate learning outcomes, competencies and skill growth over time. In addition to being an assessment tool, they can be used to showcase student accomplishments, and eventually the District plans to use them to engage parents in student learning. What are the benefits of an ePortfolio? If you're not sure why you might need student portfolios here's some of the many reasons teachers think they are an important learning tool:
• ePortfolios are a powerful record of a student's reflection and learning.
• They involve a process of self-reflection and personal growth that involves a great amount of self-reflection and thought.
• They encourage lifelong learning as students master the process of their own learning.
• By encouraging communication, collaboration, creativity, innovation, problem solving and critical thinking; students develop skills essential for 21st Century life. It also serves as a record of their mastery.
• Using tools that develop 21st century skills, students are more engaged in their learning. Particularly content they themselves can create and share.
• It's an opportunity for students to build their own digital identity.
• Developing a portfolio incorporates many different tools such as online research and other digital tools to create, manage and reflect on their work. They not only build critical thinking skills, but the technical literacy employers expect in the 21st Century.
• It allows students and teachers to share their work with parents and administrators.

It is necessary to reach and teach farther than ever before. It is there, you will find Spaceman Spiff!

Great expectations: Exemplary Students today, Awesome employees tomorrow. Come learn how social collaboration technology can help you equip your students for the future!

For today’s students, information technology (IT) plays an integral role in their everyday lives. They actively use many different technologies for their studies, work, and recreation. We will explore how Social Collaboration can be used to increase the engagement with these students. This presentation will also explore how Social Collaboration can be used to increase the engagement with students and prepare them for the workforce through Social Business. We will demonstrate how Social Platforms can provide an “exceptional Virtual Education experience” for all Students and members of staff. During our workshop we will show real life example of the environment we are now providing at other schools as well as exciting ways that the social platform can be delivered through an innovative low cost wireless device launched by revolutionary Canadian Tablet maker DataWind – using technology to empower students in underserviced areas around the world – enabling them to connect and grow in a Global way.
